From Olaudah Equiano to Mary Antin, Ocean Vuong or Julia Alvarez — translingual writing in English (short: ESL) spans decades, even centuries, and certainly extends over continents and oceans. In libraries and bookstores, you find ESL novels and collections here and there, sometimes in the cultural section, sometimes in the respective genre section. What these books often have in common, however, is that the writer’s non-nativeness in the English language is hidden from the author’s bio, anything ‘othering’ them being a potential loss of a reader or buyer.
Tint believes in the strengths of translingual writing, and that these strengths deserve the light of day — or the light of the library, in this special case. To celebrate the release of our very own physical collection of ESL writing Tinted Trails, we present the English as a Second Language Bookshelf at the English and American Studies Library at the University of Graz. In cooperation with the library, the shelf will be revealed to the public on November 6, 2023 and last for about a month.
Whether you seek innovative poetry, thrilling narratives or vignettes of life, let this shelf be your guide into the world of translingual writing. The individual titles can soon be found in the library online service unikat.*
Curated by Chiara Meitz and Lisa Schantl, with assistance from Andrea Färber and Filippo Bagnasco.
