That was … Tint in NYC

Published May 10th, 2023 News

Tint Journal is not just about publishing but also about community. This is true for our volunteer team as well as for our contributing writers with whom we like to connect at our readings, meet-ups and other gatherings.

Recently, Tint Journal’s founder and Editor-in-Chief Lisa Schantl flew across the Atlantic to (re)connect with a part of our overseas Tint crowd. From May 1 to 9, 2023 her schedule was filled with inspiring conversations about ESL literature, the publishing scene and future plans for Tint.

The relationship between Tint Journal’s poetry editor John Salimbene and Lisa goes back to Lisa’s time at Montclair State University in 2017/18, where they attended a poetry writing class together. After founding Tint a few months later, Lisa asked John to get on board and he has been curating the poetry section ever since. At her stay in NYC, she even had the utmost pleasure to attend his graduation reading for his MFA in Poetry from William Paterson University.

Together, they also met up with Tint Journal’s prose editor Matthew Monroy. He had been referred to Tint by John, and it was Lisa’s first time meeting with him in person. As such, this is a wonderful example for Tint’s work beyond borders, showing how fruitful collaborations can emerge and be maintained thanks to the power of the Internet. They were so busy connecting that they forgot to take a picture; this has to be made up for at their next meeting, which will hopefully happen sooner than later.

A further point on Lisa’s agenda was connecting to Tint contributing writers. She did so first in Cold Spring, upstate New York, where she enjoyed lunch with her former Creative Nonfiction instructor and avid Tint Journal promoter Kathy Curto and Tint contributing writer Ines Rodrigues, who is currently in the process of finishing her MFA in Fiction and Translation at Columbia University (New York City). Together, they unpacked the importance of literature in translation and how travel informs our understanding of the world.

Lisa’s stay peaked in an informal gathering with a set of Tint contributing writers in Bryant Park, Manhattan, on Sunday, May 7. Annick Duignan, Iva Ticic and Leyla Shukurova came out to engage in a conversation with Lisa and John. Vanessa Cervini, an assistant at Tint currently looking into the literary magazine’s options with audio material, joined the gathering, too. All writers or interestees who are in the NYC area and did not make it to the gathering are invited to reach out via email to be connected with Tint writers in NYC. The power felt at the gathering was incredible, and we hope to keep the energy flowing.

This trip was phenomenal on all accounts, and that it took place at a time when Tint is about to celebrate five years in publishing and their first anthology added an even more celebratory feel to it. It was fantastic to see with one’s own eyes how Tint spans around the globe and how our community extends into all directions. We’ll continue traveling the world with ESL literature – with our issues, our volunteer work, and all our other endeavors, and we are grateful that you are traveling with us.
