Tint Journal’s founder and Editor-in-Chief Lisa Schantl had the honor to judge the prose and poetry submissions for the Spring Reading by the International Writers Collective in 2023.
The collective offers fiction and poetry workshops in Amsterdam and The Hague as well as online, and has been active since 2011. They are all about creating a safe, nurturing and fun atmosphere when writing and discussing literary texts, and dedicated to the community they have built over the years. In their orientation, they are just as diverse as Tint Journal, taking in writers of all nationalities and levels, offering an open-minded and free-spirited forum.
It came thus as a wonderful surprise when Sarah Carriger, the manager of the collective, and Karen Kao, one of its long-term teachers, reached out to Lisa last fall and invited her to judge the student reading in spring 2023. After receiving the submissions by students of all four levels offered by IWC and reading through them with care, respect and passion for the craft, Lisa made her choice and selected seven texts for performance at the Spring Reading.
The reading itself took place on April 23, 2023 at the independent and volunteer-run poetry bookshop Perdu in the heart of Amsterdam. After a brief introduction by Sarah, Lisa briefly presented Tint Journal to the crowd and then the stage belonged to the readers and their narratives. Every author captured the audience with humor, critical thought and/or stunning imagery. The evening concluded with drinks, snacks and, most important: fun and inspiring conversations.
These were the reading authors: Liz Dabulskis, Mona Dahir, Nan Damhuis, Alexandra Gowling, Hader Morsy, Rob Huddlestone Phillips, Inge Lisenka Wallage, and faculty reader Karen Kao.
We want to thank IWC for having us and hope that many of their students will decide to submit to Tint Journal, and that tinted writers will engage with the collective. Our missions overlap on various accounts, and we hope that this fruitful and welcoming encounter will grow and blossom!
